I don't have any really good examples, but I notice that a lot of tumblr art has a similar art style. Soft edges, anime-like expressions, cute characters etc. Is there some common source of inspiration or tutorials that most people use, or is that style just preferred for whatever reason?

To me this is THE definitive Instagram art style (kind of like how the red nose became the Tumblr art style). Personally I'm kind of tired of seeing it everywhere. I feel like these artists kind of act like machines that just add shiny smooth filters to girls' selfies. I don't want to shame them as obviously they are technically good at what.

A lot of art schools teach you "A style" but don't teach you how to develop your own. People donate and who run these places want "this brand, BUT-" rather than a new art style that is someone's unique brand of art. CalArts can be standardised, and then anyone can do it. You can replace that art student with another art student.
